April 7 is a big day for Samsung users. The long-awaited One UI 7 update will begin rolling out today, starting with the Galaxy S24 series, Galaxy Z Fold 6, and Galaxy Z Flip 6. The update hasn’t started showing up yet, but it’s only a matter of time now.
So, while you’re waiting for that notification to pop up, now’s the perfect time to get your device ready. A little prep goes a long way in making sure your One UI 7 experience is smooth and bug-free.
One UI 7 update preparation steps
1. Charge up your device to 50% (at least)
Major system updates consume more power than a regular patch. Make sure your phone has at least 50% battery, or just keep it plugged in throughout the process to avoid interruptions.
2. Clear some storage space
One UI 7 will be a large download — possibly several gigabytes, depending on your device. Ensure that your device has at least 8-10GB of free space to skip installation errors because of low storage.
Head to Settings > Device care > Storage to clear unnecessary files, large media, and unused apps. Also, check your Recycle Bin in the Gallery app—you might be able to reclaim a few extra gigs there.
3. Back up your data
While the update shouldn’t wipe anything, accidents happen. Use Samsung Cloud, Google One, or the Smart Switch app to back up your contacts, photos, messages, and settings. Better safe than sorry.
You can use the Temporary cloud backup feature to backup unlimited files for 30 days. Remember to restore the data before the backup expires.
4. Install pending software updates
Some apps may not behave well on a new Android version if they haven’t been optimized yet. Open Galaxy Store and Play Store, go to “My apps,” and hit Update all. This ensures better compatibility with One UI 7 and helps prevent app crashes or glitches after the update.
Additionally, ensure that there’s no software update waiting for installation. Go to Settings > Software updates and tap the Download and install option to check for updates.
5. Use a strong Wi-Fi connection
While you can download the major upgrade over a mobile data connection, a stable Wi-Fi connection is recommended that is more reliable and faster to avoid corrupt downloads or failed installs.
When will other Galaxy devices get the update?
Samsung announced that the Galaxy S24, Fold 6, and Flip 6 will be the first to receive One UI 7 update. The update will then expand to more devices, including the Galaxy S24 FE, S23 series, S22 series, Fold 5, Flip 5, Tab S10 series, Tab S9 series, and more in the coming weeks. So if you’re using an older flagship or a mid-range Galaxy phone, hang tight—your turn is coming soon.
